Sane Asylums, the Success of Homeopathy Before Psychiatry Lost Its Mind
The recovered history of America's astonishing homeopathic mental hospitals (Gaia interview)
Some of you may be unaware of my 2023 appearance on the show Open Minds, hosted by the insightful Regina Meredith available on Gaia.com.
Regina interviewed me about my book, Sane Asylums, the Success of Homeopathy: Before Psychiatry Lost its Mind. Together we delved the obscured history of 19th and early 20th century homeopathy and its institutional impact on the mental illness of its time. Our discussion explored the interplay between existential issues and bodily disease. It also brought to light the superiority of the asylums’ utopian handling of mental illness as compared to conventional pharmaceutical intervention.
Homeopathy’s ghosting has impoverished mental health care choice. That’s too bad. Inexpensive, non-patented homeopathic medicines offer an excellent and risk-free recourse for even the most grievous mental health challenges. Nor do they cause tardive dyskinesia and five kinds of bipolar depression like antipsychotics do.
A past era’s hugely popular sanitariums are an inconvenient truth for the profit-driven psycho-pharmaceutical industry. Within academia and the social media Big Pharma’s lobby has succeeded in warping the asylums’ genuine history. Along with suppressing freedom of choice industry propaganda has bought a monopoly on treatment options. Righting the wrong requires undoing a history’s hijacking. Thank you Regina for lending a hand.
